Information and Documentation Centre on Ethics in Medicine (IDEM)

The Information and Documentation Centre on Ethics in Medicine (IDEM) was established  at the Academy for Ethics in Medicine (AEM) in 1992. Since January 2001 IDEM is run in cooperation with the Dept. of Ethics and History in Medicine (head: Claudia Wiesemann) and is financed by the University Medical Centre.

The central task of IDEM is to produce and maintain the medico-ethical literature database ETHMED.

ETHMED contains almost 14.000 data sets and you can search the database free of charge via the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) (www.dimdi.de), via the virtual medical library “MedPilot” (www.medpilot.de) and via the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences (DRZE) (www.drze.de). The cooperation with the Dept. of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine resulted in research grants for several European database projects and other national projects.

The project "European Information Networks on Ethics in Medicine and Biotechnology" (www.eureth.net) aims at the construction of a European network of information and databases.
It involves 26 co-operating institutes from 16 European countries for which the European Commission provided start-up financing worth 1.5 Mio. Euro.
